Treatment Resources

A Hand-Crafted Team of Experts

My ethical and professional commitments require me to offer recommendations that respond to your needs, whether I have an association with the treatment facilities I recommend or not. If an individual is not working with a local therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist, I will often start there. Establishing a local therapeutic connection is important so that that person or team of people can be a part of the treatment team if and when residential or outpatient treatment is required.

The treatment centers and programs listed below are my contracted companies – those in whom I have utmost confidence to provide the level of care that they say they do. I speak on their behalf, I provide clinical education and outreach information to Behavioral Health Professionals and other treatment centers about the treatment they provide. They also have confidence in me to work with families and individuals as well as other behavioral health professionals to send them appropriate clients for admission consideration. They are the ones who make my consultation work free to professionals, families, and individuals – even when the right clinical fit is not one of these contracted companies.

I also list individual clinicians and interventionists with their contact information by state. They are professionals whom I have come to know and trust over the years. These, too, are vetted individuals with whom I have shared clients, with whom I have collaborated and come to count on for their clinical excellence and their professional care. Some are therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists; some offer individual and/or groups, family or couples therapy. Some provide intensives or guide professional interventions. Please contact them directly or call me if you require more information before you call.

Trusted Partnerships

Crownview Psychiatric Institute and Crownview Co-Occurring Institute, Oceanside, CA

Primary Psychiatric Treatment and Dual Diagnosis for men and women. Residential in private homes with step-down to PHP, IOP, and Extended Sober Living.

Crownview Psychiatric Institute and Crownview Co-Occurring Institute provide primary psychiatric treatment for multiple levels of mental health disorders which could include schizophrenia, PTSD, depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, conversion disorder, co-occurring disorders, drug and alcohol addiction.

THE PROGRAM

Both Crownview Psychiatric Institute and Crownview Co-Occurring Institute develop comprehensive treatment plans tailored to the specific needs of each client. Specializing in complex psychiatric conditions, our clients have the opportunity to both learn and practice the relationship and life skills needed to take charge of their lives and reach the highest possible level of independence.

Component 1:  Intensive Personalized Psychotherapy

This is the core of our program: Crownview has licensed psychiatrists and clinicians at our treatment center during regular hours of operation, and a depth of professional experience with the best current, evidence-based therapies.

CCI’s individualized treatment approach creates highly customized action plans. They design wrap-around therapy strategies with a team approach.

The Crownview program contains a wealth of diverse licensed professionals in addition to a fully integrated psychiatric team. This means that our psychiatrists are not independent contractors, but rather, full time employees that are available on call at any hour. Support staff play an important role by acting as the eyes and ears of our treatment team.

Utilizing an experiential or “hands-on” approach, case managers engage with the client and begin forging a relationship of trust. Together, they begin identifying and practicing life skills in need of improvement.

CCI believes that life skills, in conjunction with proper medication, sustain mental health. Medications are used as needed to stabilize the client and lay a foundation of receptivity to other, more sustainable, and life-long therapies.

The goal, evaluated with daily monitoring, is to reduce or even eliminate medications when they are no longer deemed necessary for the client’s well-being.

Psychiatry – Each client is assessed by a Crownview psychiatrist and is seen regularly for follow-up appointments throughout the course of treatment.

Individual Therapy

Each client is assigned a highly qualified individual therapist who provides an as-needed number of personal therapy hours per week. They work together to create a therapeutic alliance, help the client identify and correct problem areas and begin arresting self-defeating behavior.

When the causes of problematic behaviors are identified, the old thought patterns and coping mechanisms are replaced with new ones in a methodical, self-reinforcing way. As the client begins to practice these new tools and begins to achieve success, self-esteem and self-efficacy begin to develop.

Full range of psychiatric and pharmacological services include the following and more:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
  • Stellate Ganglion Block for Trauma
  • Pharmaceutical Therapies
  • Milieu Therapies
  • Solution-Focused Therapies
  • TMS (Trans-cranial magnetic stimulation)
  • Biofeedback
  • Experiential Therapies
  • EMDR (Eye Movement and Desensitization Reprocessing)
  • Nutrition Training and Coaching
  • Yoga, Exercise and Gym Memberships
  • Mindfulness and Meditation
  • Acupuncture (by request)
  • Equine (Horseback) Therapy
  • Counselling the Family

Group Therapy

As clients begin to get involved in the group therapy process, they begin to identify with one another and learn that they are not alone. Bonds of trust are formed, and differences are “worked out,” teaching our clients how to establish, maintain and nurture healthy and lasting relationships. Often with mental illness and addiction, sufferers lose self-confidence, and become trapped in relationships where drugs and alcohol become dysfunctional remedies otherwise referred to as “self-medicating”.

Over time, this behavior further deepens feelings of insecurity, stifling emotional growth and maturity. The sufferer struggles with anger and resentment and exhibits childlike coping mechanisms. Facilitated group therapy challenges the client to mature emotionally by utilizing new skills, resulting in self-efficacy and confidence.

Therapy for the Family

A client’s family and other loved ones should be part, if at all possible, of the treatment plan. They are often in need of counselling and therapy themselves – something CCI has championed from the start, addressing each of these needs in an inclusive way.

CCIs host regular Family Weekends with therapist run workshops to give time for re-integrating clients with their families in a controlled setting and providing opportunity for celebration of the client’s progress.

  • Teaching Effective Communication Skills
  • Establishing Healthy Relationship Boundaries
  • Unlearning Dysfunctional Habits
  • Breaking the Cycle of Co-Dependency and Enabling
  • Creating new Patterns of Self-Reliance and Trust
  • Training to Live Independently or Cooperatively
  • Family Support Group Weekends

Supportive Local Setting

Crownview Co-Occurring Institute Oceanside is situated in a quiet, upscale neighborhood only a few blocks from the beach near the downtown district, and is within easy walking distance from various medical, legal, and social services including SSI. This provides clients with ready access to the network of support agencies that help form one of the hallmarks of the CCI approach to therapy – giving each client’s inclusive needs a full team support.

CCI Oceanside features seven therapy offices for individual counselling and two well-appointed and well-lit group therapy rooms. There are five administrative offices to provide the highest level of professional support to the diagnostic and therapy teams. The Oceanside facility is just minutes away from our original Carlsbad location where CCI has additional therapists and two group therapy rooms.

The goal in planning, at every stage and in every detail, is to create an inviting, comfortable experience for our clients – to make it calming, colorful and airy. CCI is located close by a great selection of restaurants and shops. But we take seriously the security of our facilities and the safety of our clients, with security cameras and an advanced alarm system.

Please call me to discuss Crownview CI as a treatment option and to explore whether this is the right fit clinically:  575-779-6062.  If you are ready to call Admissions, please call Gabe Goode at: 760.493.6708.

CCI Philosophy

Establishing trust between client and therapist is the foundation of recovery and a catalyst of transformation. This is our first priority and commitment – carefully building a professional relationship with the client at their point of need.

Innovative Approach to Unique Challenges

Crownview Co-Occurring Institute has developed an innovative approach to the unique challenges of treating serious mental illness or emotional trauma, with or without substance addiction. CCI has extensive experience treating PTSD patients, both military and civilian, as well as mental health conditions such as schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder. They have assembled a seasoned team of highly skilled psychiatrists and healthcare professionals dedicated to helping clients and their families rebuild shattered lives.

Through a comprehensive clinical assessment, CCI Clinical staff specifically focus on “areas of needed improvement,” developing and implementing a highly customized treatment plan providing “wrap-around” services including psychiatry, various therapies, nutrition education, life skills, case management, Occupational development, and recreation. This highly adaptive approach of treating the client as a whole person differentiates CCI from conventional treatment.

One Size Does Not Fit All

Using a team approach, CCI identifies treatment components that will be most effective for each individual. This dynamic model can greatly increase efficacy and is ideal for clients considered treatment resistant. Trust between client and therapist is the foundation of recovery and a catalyst to transformation.

This is CCI’s first priority and commitment – building a positive relationship with the client from the earliest stages of treatment and adapting a treatment plan to their individual needs. As the client gains awareness of the team’s flexible approach, they will become increasingly more committed to the treatment plan”. CCI’s diverse team of licensed, certified, and experienced clinical professionals, we are able to accurately assess each client and choose therapists who are the best fit for each case”.

With the adaptive and individualized nature of our program and the extensive network of contacts we’ve built over time, we’re able to address almost any circumstance that is pertinent to the therapeutic experience. With flexibility we are able to offer almost any modality of client care, referrals to safe affordable and supervised housing as well as access to any needs outside of the clinical scope.

Ai Pono, Wailuku, Maui, HI

Ai Pono Eating Disorder Residential

Virtual IOP, Alumni, and Family and Friends TREATMENT FOR ADOLESCENT GIRLS AND WOMEN

Ai Pono is, in my opinion, the most psychodynamic ED resource in the country for adolescent girls and women.  Located in Maui, Hawaii, it is a small, independently owned, evidence-based, residential resource.  One of the founders is Dr. Anita Johnston, PhD, author of the Eating in the Light of the Moon.  The therapeutic approach she explains in her book forms the basis of the treatment curriculum, which clinically experienced staff facilitate.

This is a small – 14-bed program, clearly for sub-acute ED, food dysregulation or restriction that asks the question, “Where’s the hunger?”  The staff is equipped to deal with mental health issues and much of the work is focused on trauma and attachment that drives the disordered food issues.

At the ‘Ai Pono Eating Disorder Program, we recognize that eating disorders are complex problems with psychological, emotional, nutritional, and biochemical components, but we do not view those who struggle with these problems as irreparably damaged. Rather, we see them as highly intuitive, sensitive beings who have developed an obsession with food, fat, and dieting as a way of coping with social and psychological stress. Recognizing and identifying the adaptive function of the eating disorder can point one towards the development of life-skills necessary for resolving the eating disorder.

We see the recovery process as a journey towards self-awareness. Through this journey, an individual can learn to nourish herself physically, as well as emotionally, and restore a sense of balance to her life. We believe that eating disorders can be successfully treated and overcome. A life of struggle and conflict can become one that is rich, meaningful, and fulfilling.

At our Residential Program in Maui, we provide a serene, nurturing setting in which women can be given a temporary reprieve from the stressors of their everyday life that may hinder the discovery of the deeper meaning embedded in their eating disorder symptoms. Our Virtual IOP program, which serves all genders, brings this warmth and support into your home.

Ai Pono treats:

  • Anorexia,
  • ARFID,
  • Binge Eating Disorder,
  • Body Dysmorphia,
  • Bulimia,
  • Compulsive Overeating,
  • Orthorexia,
  • OSFED,

Dr. Michael Barta Institute, Broomfield, CO

Dr. Michael Barta, Ph.D., CSAT-S, APSAT is the Founder and CEO of the Dr. Michael Barta Institute, ENTUNE Reconnection Intensives™, and author of TINSA Ò (Trauma Induced Sexual Addiction); a neurological approach to the treatment of sex addiction.  The ENTUNE ™ model builds upon Steven Porges’ Polyvagal Theory to address addiction and mental health from the lens of neurobiology and to engage that rupture with opportunities to repair and reconnect.

ENTUNE™ is his newest applied neurobiological model that treats the source of addictions and blends Richard Schwartz’s Internal Family Systems (IFS) to clarify and personify the neurobiological impact of trauma.

In his 5 Day, 5 Men Intensive, Barta works with the men to identify the trauma and attachment wounds and begin the healing work of “entunement.” The process is transformational as the men address and heal the core drivers of the brain’s re-wiring for safety, eliminating the need for external “self-medicating” thinking and behavior.  In addition to therapy, Dr. Barta offers psychoeducation and somatic healing components.  The week-long program offers 40-50 hours of in-person work directly with Dr. Michael Barta.

4 Winds Farm in Glenwood Springs, CO

4winds.farm

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO WOMEN’S WELLNESS IN COLORADO

Located in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, 4Winds Farm offers a holistic approach to mental health and wellbeing. They address the constraints of traditional treatments through integrating the body, mind, and spirit. 4 Winds is uniquely focused on dissolving diagnostic categories. Residents are not divided by their diagnosis, and they participate in classes and workshops with our greater community, helping to break down the silence and stigma that can be so isolating.

Custom designed wellness and recovery programs are uniquely designed for individuals following a psychosocial and interpersonal assessment. Through deep understanding and work with traumatic memory 4 Winds addresses unresolved trauma, PTSD, and co-occurring disorders.

Trauma may result from a wide variety of stressors such as accidents, invasive medical procedures, sexual or physical assault, emotional abuse, neglect, war, natural disasters, loss, birth trauma, generational, cultural trauma and the corrosive stressors of ongoing fear and conflict.

4 Winds wellness community is located on 134 acres of pristine farmland between Sunlight Mountain and Glenwood Hot Springs.  The Wellness Options consist of thirty-sixty-ninety-day women’s mental health and trauma recovery program, offering daily educational and integrative therapeutic sessions, outdoor and equine therapy, private lodging, and organically sourced meals with a focus on well-being. They also offer a 3-week wellness immersion program.  4 Winds is a safe supportive space where women can reclaim their mental health, address unresolved trauma, and heal.

TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY

One of the most important concepts that informs all wellness and healing practices at 4Winds Farm is “linear thinking, circular being.” Both are powerful, innate capabilities we share as humans, but today’s modern culture tends to prefer the linear—often to the detriment of human vitality and social capability.

“Linear thinking” refers to straight-line goal orientation. To many of us, this feels satisfyingly practical and targeted. But when you’re focused on the straight, confined highway in front of you, you compromise your peripheral view—which is to say that you miss most of what’s going on.

Moreover, circular being makes us aware of our true nature as thinking beings, and it allows us to learn from the environments we occupy. The seasons always come around again. Our measurements of years and months are in fact measurements of cycles, not linear progressions.

True connection to ourselves and to the earth requires inviting our environment in rather than pushing it away; observing and connecting with the natural cycles supports natural healing, rather than artificially creating a pre-formulated track.

TREATMENT MODALITIES

At 4 Winds Farm, the elements, animals, and food work in tandem with licensed professionals who guide and mentor toward health and healing.  Qigong, Equine Therapy in the Native Tradition, Archery and Mindfulness, Food and Movement all contribute to healing in this safe sanctuary for women.

The McCoy House accommodates 7 women who live in an antebellum style home near public transportation in Jackson, MS and are offered peer-mentored support and guidance from the Executive Director of Operations as they participate in the broad range of therapeutic and experiential healing modalities.

When The McCoy House was purchased, it was a rat, bat, and mold-infested.  It had fallen into disrepair and had to be restored inside and out.  The story of The McCoy House and its restoration has an added depth and dimension since it is a house that is dedicated to recovery from addiction and other survival strategies that work until they become destructive.  In this sense, the finding, funding, restoration, expansion, and finishing of the house is the story of the women who come to recover and reclaim their authentic lives.  It is here they restore the hope and freedom to fulfill life’s purpose and reclaim home in themselves.  The house and the women are one story

The McCoy House Extended Aftercare for Women offers a tranquil place for women to reflect on the past, live in the present and plan for the future. It is a spacious, gated two-story home with vaulted ceilings and an abundance of natural light tucked away on seven and a half wooded acres in the middle of Jackson, Mississippi.

The McCoy House Extended Care Programming offers modalities and experiences that facilitate healing from the drivers of addictive thinking and behavior. Trauma, adverse developmental experiences (real or perceived), as well as attachment and connection wounds, rewire the brain for survival. When that happens, safety and self-medication become the primary focus of the individual.

The essence of addiction and the mental health aspects of anxiety and depression that accompany it is a “using” mentality – whether one uses drugs, alcohol, people, sex, food, exercise, work, or things. Getting sober breaks that cycle but getting conscious, living intentionally in a transparent community with others, rewires the brain for healing and connection. This is the vision of The McCoy House Extended Care for Women.

The McCoy House’s mission is to offer the following modalities for healing and

consciousness:

MERCY LODGE

When The McCoy House acquired the ranch style house nestled in back of their 3.5-acre property, they saw an opportunity to expand their acreage and services.

In addition to 7.5 acres for therapeutic and experiential programming, the home features four bedrooms and four bathrooms, a full kitchen, dining area, large event space and courtyard – perfect for workshops, therapeutic retreats, healing intensives, corporate meetings, and picnics. Mercy Lodge is available for rental.

The Real McCoy Thrift Store & Boutique

Owned and operated by The McCoy House, the store offers a service to the community.  New or gently used clothing, furniture, and household items that have been generously donated by the Jackson community are sold at unreasonably low prices.  After the first month in residence at The McCoy House, women can work in the thrift store, developing job skills and building resume experience in cash register, customer service, and merchandising.

Ted Wiard along with his wife, Marcella, created Golden Willow from a combined vision of compassion and healing towards all life. Ted is a licensed clinical therapist, certified grief counselor, an ordained minister, a New Mexico certified schoolteacher and a certified tennis professional. Ted’s passion for working with grief, in its many forms, arose from his own personal losses in which he realized there were very few places that offered support and healing from grief.  While working at Betty Ford Center, Ted counseled individuals and families with clinical and spiritual support through the recovery process, realizing that many individuals rarely touch the underlying conditions that led them to their dysfunctional behaviors. He has written numerous articles on the subject of emotional healing, grief, loss, trauma and the connection verses disconnection of spirituality in grief, loss, life transitions as well as addiction and relapse prevention.  His book, “Witnessing Ted, The Journey to Potential Though Grief & Loss”, is a sensitive guide on the six aspects of grief and the journey to a wiser more authentic life.  He is sought out for speaking engagements nationally to offer his inspirational and dynamic message of hope and healing.

Families, Couples and Individual Adults.  I focus on relationship skills such as boundaries, communication and personal growth.  I am passionate about helping people identify the barriers and roadblocks (usually from their family history) that keep them from living full and complete lives. Addiction clients learn early that the addiction is only a symptom of the problem and for that reason we must look at root causes and change the hardwiring within us that holds us hostage.

If you, or your loved one, are struggling with infidelity, pornography, or sex addiction, your life may be feeling out of control and you’re not sure where to turn. You’re on an emotional rollercoaster of fear, anger, grief, disbelief and confusion – or, if you have been dealing with this for a long time, you may have lost hope, become resigned to the situation, and wonder if this is all life has to offer you.

Experienced, certified interventionist, trained under Ken Seeley, John Southworth and Brad Lamm,  specializing in substance use disorder for adolescents and adults.  We believe in intervening on the entire family system, providing support and resources for all involved, not just the identified loved one that is struggling.  For as the family recovers, the chance for success for their loved one increases exponentially. Utilizing the best parts of the Johnson, Systemic and Invitational models to suit each specific case’s needs, including the creation of a treatment plan and placement that makes sense both clinically and financially for your family. Well facilitated intervention is a loving, powerful and empowering experience treating all members with dignity, compassion and respect. Married with available supervised transport and supportive monitoring and aftercare services, we can support a client and their family for up to 3 years to keep all engaged in healthy change.
